If you are there with your child when they are colouring, we all notice how quickly they become chatter boxes about what they are doing on the paper! This can seriously improve your child’s language development and increase the speed in which this progresses. It can help you improve their vocabulary with recognition and learning of descriptive adjectives and colour names. Learning these skills from a young age allows your child to feel more confident reproducing these words in different situations.
Coloring gives children an opportunity to express their creative side. It allows them to think about different color combinations they can use to create their own unique picture. Do not get upset if children are not coloring properly or if they choose to color outside the lines. Teach children how to fill a space and color in different directions. Whether they stay in the lines or not, coloring fosters a creative spirit and an appreciation for visual differences. Coloring can spark the imagination and inspire children to brainstorm and learn to think of new ideas on their own naturally.
Don’t worry if your kid is coloring outside of the lines. Instead of criticizing, praise their effort. Teach them how to fill in spaces as well as how to do up and down strokes. Using complementary colors to give a picture a more vibrant appearance is another thing that you can teach your child.
